Sonic boom shatters the quiet of a Wednesday evening

(June 27, 2013)   On the night Nantucket residents experienced an alarming noise, so loud that it shook many houses, there were six F-15 jets from the Air National Guard’s 104th Fighter Wing based in Western Massachusetts flying near the island.

A sonic boom from the fighter jets breaking the sound barrier has emerged as the only plausible explanation for the jarring noise heard last week, although the Massachusetts Air National Guard has denied that any of the jets went supersonic over Nantucket.
