13 people killed in plane crash in Parañaque

MANILA, Philippines (4th UPDATE) - A four-seater aircraft crashed in Parañaque City on Saturday afternoon, killing 13 people, including children.

Col. Manuel Manuel of Parañaque's Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the plane crashed in a depressed area in Better Living Subdivision, Taiwan St., Barangay Don Bosco.

Parañaque City Mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr. arrived on the scene and reported that the crash damaged at least 50 shanties and set fire to the F. Serrano Elementary School.

“Wala ka nang makitang eroplano, ‘yung makina na lang,” Bernabe told radio dzMM.

Ramon Gutierrez, director-general of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, said 2 pilots and a civilian onboard the aircraft were killed. The pilots were identified as Timoteo Aldo and Jessie Kim Lustica.

Gutierrez earlier told dzMM that the plane with tail no. RPC 824 encountered a problem after taking off from the Manila domestic airport.

He said the plane, owned by Innovators Technology Inc., was bound for San Jose, Mindoro to pick up cargo.

Gutierrez said one of the pilots had requested the Manila airport control tower for relanding, but the plane did not make it.

“Pag-take off niya dito sa ating domestic runway 1331, nagkaroon ng aberya at tumawag sa tower nagre-request uli ng emergency landing pero hindi na inabot kaya bumagsak siya,” he said.

Several residents were also injured in the incident. An AFP report said at least 20 people were brought to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Inspector Wilson Tan of the Parañaque BFP, meanwhile, said 3 people are missing. They identified them as Roldan Sabidorian, Maricel Rodriguez and Maribel Catalogo.

Dir. Gen. Gutierrez: Plane that crashed was a cargo plane bound for San Jose, Mindoro, loaded with fuel.  Pilot and the co-pilot were the passengers of the crashed plane.


Rescuers recovered the burned bodies of nine adults, a child and an infant from the crash site near Manila airport, Gwendolyn Pang, secretary-general of the Philippine National Red Cross, told AFP.

Police officials on the scene gave an identical fatality count.
 
(Updated 3:30 p.m.) At least 11 people were reported killed when a light aircraft crashed at a residential area in Parañaque City Saturday afternoon.

In an interview on GMA's News TV Live, Prañaque City Mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr. said that based on an initial and unofficial body count, 11 people perished in the accident.

Earlier, Chief Inspector Enrique Sy of the Parañaque police confirmed five people were killed in the accident and the subsequent fire it created.

Foreign news service Associated Press, meanwhile, reported that seven were killed in the incident.

On the other hand, radio dzBB reported that over 20 people were rushed to the Parañaque Doctors Hospital shortly after the crash.

Minutes after the crash, Bernabe cited initial reports indicating the incident occurred past 2 p.m., with the plane crashing near an elementary school.

"Apparently may tinamaang bahay (Initial reports indicate it may have hit some houses)," he said in an interview on dzBB radio.

He said the general area where the plane crashed was a "depressed area."

Volunteer firefighter group TXTFire said the crash caused a fire at the Doña Soledad Extension in Better Living subdivision area.

It said the fire had reached the fifth alarm as of 2:50 p.m.

Meanwhile, an eye witness, Earl Esto, told GMA News Online the plane crashed around 2:30 p.m. in F. Serrano Subdivision.

Ramon Gutierrez, director-general of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), told dzMM the light plane owned by Queen Air crashed in a subdivision in Merville Subdivision.

However, a separate report from first responders said the plane crashed in Better Living Subdivision, Taiwan St., Barangay Don Bosco. An elementary school was damaged by the crash.

Gutierrez said the plane, bound for San Jose, Mindoro, encountered a problem after taking off from the domestic runway.

The pilot requested the tower for relanding, but the plane instead crashed.

As of posting, several structures were on fire following the crash.

Gutierrez said he's not sure if it's a 6-seater passenger or a cargo plane.

He said Manila International Airport Authorities (MIAA) emergency personnel are on their way to the crash site.

Gutierrez said the plane with tail no. 824 is owned by Innovators Technology Inc. (ITI).

A follow-up report by dzMM'S Ricky Velasco said the plane crashed at around 2:45 p.m..

He said that the pilot of the plane, which was bound for San Jose, Mindoro province, requested for a rerun from the air control tower after taking off from Runway 1331. He said that the pilot cited mechanical failure as a reason for the emergency landing.

He said that after the emergency request, the plane crashed.

Meanwhile, a report by radio dzMM said that rescuers who rushed to the crash site have reported casualties.

The report said that local firefighters have also responded to the crash site to put out the blaze, which was reportedly spreading to more houses.

Fire authorities have placed the fire in the area at Task Force Alpha.
