Accident occurred December 16, 2019 at Raleigh Executive Jetport (KTTA) Sanford, Lee County, North Carolina




SANFORD, North Carolina(WNCN) — Three planes were involved in an incident that destroyed one airplane at the Raleigh Executive Jetport in Sanford on Monday, officials said.

No pilots were injured but a plane that was gutted by fire could be seen beside a runway.

Another plane appeared to have wing damage after the incident that happened around 1 p.m. No planes were in the air when the incident happened, officials said.

Deep River Fire Department responded to the scene.

There’s no official word on what caused the incident.

SANFORD, North Carolina (WTVD) -- A small airplane crashed and caught fire at Raleigh Executive Jetport in Lee County.

It happened Monday afternoon at one of the runways at the airport on Rod Sullivan Road. The plane was taxiing, the throttle got stuck and the plane careened into other planes, an airport official told ABC11.

The pilot jumped out before the aircraft caught fire.

Video from Chopper11 HD showed the single-engine plane just off the runway in the grass. The grass around the plane had been charred black from the airplane catching fire.

The cockpit of the airplane was severely damaged.

Several other airplanes, which were parked on a nearby runway, were visibly damaged, particularly a Cessna 177-B with extensive wing damage. Yellow tape had been put up around the damaged airplanes.

No injuries were reported. There's no damage estimate yet, airport officials said.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol secured the area until the National Transportation Safety Board arrived to survey the scene.
