On October 24, 2019, about 2115 central daylight time, a Cessna 172 airplane, N1443E, conducted a forced la
nding near Swea City, Iowa. The student pilot, the sole occupant, received minor injuries, and the airplane sustained substantial damage. The airplane was operated by Iowa Flight Training, and registered to Iowaair, Inc., under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as an instructional flight. Night visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight.

The student pilot was conducting a night cross-country flight. He reported that during the flight he noticed that the oil pressure gauge indicated near zero pressure, so he planned to divert back to the airport at Estherville. Shortly afterwards, the engine started shaking and stopped producing full power. The airplane was unable to maintain altitude, so he elected to conduct a forced landing to a field.

An examination of the airplane by the responding Federal Aviation Administration inspector, showed the airplane had impacted a berm during the forced landing, and came to rest inverted.

The airplane was retained for further examination.
