Mount Pleasant Municipal Airport (KMOP), Isabella County, Michigan: Planes, cars showcased at “Wings and Wheels” event

Even though Jeremy Pontious brought his 1985 Buick Riviera to sell at the “Wings and Wheels” event Saturday at the Mt. Pleasant Municipal Airport, he obtained a unique experience, too.

“It’s people looking for things from the past that are neat,” said Pontious, from Coleman.

Pontious flies model airplanes across the field at the airport and is a member of the Mt. Pleasant Model Aircraft Club so the event - hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 907 - was an experience for him.

It featured approximately 25 planes and 130 classic cars, according to Butch Ballauer, treasurer of the EAA Chapter 907.

“I think planes and car people are very similar,” Ballauer said. “They like to show off their equipment to other people.”

He said planes came from cities such as Detroit, Harrison and Clare, and the cars came from places such as Greenville, Grand Rapids and Everett.

The planes showcased were antiques, homebuilt, and production models, and classic and custom cars.

Ballauer said between 400 and 500 people came to the event.

Cara Sharp, from Mt. Pleasant, heard about the event after a flier was brought into her place of employment.

“I like old cars. They’re classic and they look good,” Sharp said.

She also commented on the planes.

“They’re cool-looking but a little tiny for my taste,” she said.

The event also had raffle giveaways and food trucks on hand as well.
