ASHEVILLE - Bruce MacDonald recently became the first student to earn a private pilot’s license through Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College’s new aviation program.
MacDonald is a member of the first class admitted to the program, which A-B Tech and WNC Aviation began in August 2015.
MacDonald completed his coursework, intensive written and oral exams, a practical flight test and 35 flight hours to qualify, according to a news release from the college.
“I’m honored to see our first private pilot complete his training today,” R.J. Corman, dean of Hospitality Education and chair of Aviation Management and Career Pilot Technology, said in the release. “Bruce is an excellent student and represents everything positive our program is about. I'm also thrilled to possibly have several other top students finish their training in the next couple of weeks.”
MacDonald, who started his flight test on Wednesday afternoon, had to postpone because of high winds, but was able to complete it on Thursday morning. His next step in the program is to earn an instrument rating and then a commercial pilot’s license.
“This is a license for me to keep learning,” MacDonald said. “This program puts us at a pretty high level. It’s harder than I expected.”
