INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — No one was injured when a single-engine plane skidded through the grass runway of a fly-in community and struck an embankment Thursday afternoon, the Indian River County Sheriff's Office said.
The incident happened about 1:10 p.m. in the Indian River Aerodrome community, on First Street Southwest west of 82nd Avenue in Indian River County. The pilot was George Norman Gerwitz, the Sheriff's Office said. His age and hometown were not available.
Aerodrome resident Roy Pinner said the plane likely came in too fast upon landing. The embankment halted the plane's skid.
The Sheriff's Office was conferring with the Federal Aviation Administration to determine whether federal authorities would investigate the incident.
The Piper PA-28-161 Warrior plane is registered to the Fishe Flying Corp. of Vero Beach, according to the FAA.

There was a mishap involving a small plane in Indian River County Thursday.
The aircraft traveled off a small grass airstrip and into a berm at the Indian River Aerodrome.
The incident happened at 265 Nieuport Drive.
Fire Rescue said the airstrip is located in a private gated community.
There were no injuries.
