An air ambulance helicopter landed in Trafalgar Square after flying past Lord Nelson's column in a dramatic rescue operation to save a stricken woman who was knocked down by a car.
Striking images capture the moment the red rotorcraft as it travelled past the statue before coming to rest in central Westminster.
Emergency services were called to Trafalgar Square after a woman was hit by the car today just before 12pm.
Armed police guarded the area as paramedics treated the woman, believed to be in her late 30s.
Pictures show the woman as she was wheeled on a stretcher following the crash on Charing Cross Road, at the junction with St Martin's Place.
Pedestrians gathered and looked on as the air ambulance made its emergency landing.
Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. Police confirmed that no arrests had been made.
