Firemen at Fuzhou Changle Airport sprayed foam over a Fuzhou Airlines aircraft (left) after a fire alert on Thursday before being told that it was the wrong aircraft.
Fuzhou Airlines confirmed on Saturday that foam mistakenly sprayed on one of its Boeing 737-800 passenger liners on Thursday damaged both its engines and would cost about 120 million yuan (HK$217 million) to replace them, The Paper.cn, a news portal based in Shanghai, reported.
The airlines said on Saturday on its Weibo account that the fire-retardant foam had entered crucial parts of the engine, requiring both engines to be replaced in an operation that would take a week or more to complete and return the aircraft to service.
Staff from the airline told mainland media that it had launched its claims procedures, but they did not disclose who claim was against and how much compensation would be sought.
On Thursday, eight fire trucks at Fuzhou Changle International Airport mistakenly sprayed the Fuzhou Airlines jet to “cool down” its before they discovered out that it was another plane operated by Air China that was reported to have sparks coming out of its engines.
The airport later explained that when the firemen arrived, the Air China aircraft had already shut down its engines, which led to the erroneous spraying of the Fuzhou Airlines plane.
The incident shut down the airport’s runways for an hour and 40 minutes and delayed 24 outbound flights.

Firefighters mistakenly sprays foam onto an aircraft next to another one that reported an engine fire emergency at the airport in Fuzhou, southeast Fujian Province. The incident caused the runway to be closed for more than 90 minutes and caused delays to many travelers.
An Air China’s passenger aircraft caught fire on its engine at an airport in southeast China this morning, but firefighters sprayed foam onto another aircraft waiting nearby. The incident caused the runway to be closed for more than 1.5 hours.
The Boeing 737 with Flight CA1822 from Fuzhou in southeast Fujian Province to Beijing suddenly caught fire on its right engine at 8 am when taxing on the runway as it was about to take off, the nation’s flagship carrier said.
The captain of the following Fuzhou Airlines FU6577 found the fire first and informed the Air China captain. The Air China aircraft closed engine and then called the firefighters, the Fuzhou Airlines said in a statement.
Eight fire trucks arrived within two minutes. However, the vehicles turned to surround the Fuzhou Airlines aircraft and began spraying foam onto the plane, the Fuzhou Airlines said.
When the firefighters realized they picked the wrong plane and moved on to deal with the Air China aircraft with the heating engine, the Fuzhou Airlines aircraft was already all covered up in foams.
The airport authority then decided to close the runway to deal with the aftermath.
All the passengers with the Fuzhou Airlines flight that was scheduled to fly to Jinan in east Shandong Province have to get off the plane, since the aircraft covered with foam has to be washed and pass a safety inspection from the aircraft manufacturer Boeing to fly again, the airline said.
The Fuzhou Airlines then arranged accommodations for all the affected passengers on that flight. Another 12 flights with this airline scheduled to take off from the airport were also delayed by up to five hours.
The runway was reopened at around 9:38 am, according to Air China.
“It turned out to be an normal situation as aircraft engines would spark sometimes and it would not threat flying safety,” the Air China said later.
