Barrow County Airport (KWDR) runway project, restaurant discussed at Tuesday night meeting

The Barrow County Airport Authority accepted the Georgia Department of Transportation’s grant for its runway 13-31 Overlay Project at last Tuesday’s meeting.

The grant will cover 90 percent of the changes coming to the main runway of the Barrow County Airport. C. W. Matthews will do the work. It will take an estimated 60 days for the grant to be fully written. The runway measures 5,500 feet by 100 feet.

Chairman Scott Miller said the project is one of the “biggest” the airport has had in a long time.

The project will start with work being done with the intersection of the airport’s second runway, 5-23. That will close both runways for a few days. Once complete, work will shift to both ends of runway 13-31.

Once complete, consultant Phil Eberly said the project will give the airport a smoother runway and a better intersection of runway.

Meeting notes

The authority gave an update to the airport’s vacant restaurant space. Miller said the cleaning process has been moving right along, and, authority member Mike Dalton added the cleaning will done by Jan. 1, barring any setbacks.

They also formed a three-person committee that will help determine what will go into the lease, such as hours and days, for whomever the next restaurant owner is occupying the space. The committee consists of Dalton, Airport Supervisor Wanda Mitchell and Vice Chairman Jerry Thompson.

One man who attended the meeting said he was interested in the restaurant space.

The authority also accepted a proposed bid of $9,930 for terminal roof repairs during new business.
