No long lines at Stewart International Airport (KSWF)NEW WINDSOR – US Airways is now flying as American Airlines, after being assimilated into the latter. As a result, the long-time US Airways service at Stewart Airport near Newburgh to Philadelphia will continue, but under the new “flag.” The signage at the Stewart terminal reflects the change.
On April 17, 1990 when commercial service began at Stewart, American was the first airline, operating flights to Chicago and Raleigh-Durham. The North Carolina flights were later transferred to Midway Airlines, which folded after the 9/11 terror attacks.
American would later downsize to its American Eagle commuter service to Chicago and later pull out of Stewart altogether.
Airport Manager Ed Harrison is on the phone with American on a regular basis in an effort to get them back to Chicago and expand its routes.
“US Air was also hubbed in Charlotte, so we are talking about serving one of their hubs from Stewart and we are having that conversation on a daily basis,” Harrison said.
An American Airlines spokesman said they have no announcements to make about Stewart or Westchester County Airport in White Plains.
There are three daily flights from Stewart to Philly.
There are 15 American departures daily from White Plains –five to Washington, four to Philadelphia, three to Orlando and three to Cleveland.
Albany County Airport has 13 daily departures – three to Cleveland, four to Washington and six to Philly. American will add three flights from Albany to Orlando starting March 3, 2016.
