On August 18, 2012, at 1140 UTC an Embraer EMB-711C (Piper PA-28R-200), Brazilian registration PT-NKA, registered to a private owner, and a Embraer EMB-711C (Piper PA-28R-200), Brazilian registration PT-NIR, registered to a private owner, collided in cruise flight and crashed in a sugar cane field in the vicinity of Fazenda Bonanza Airport (SDBN), Santa Barbara D’Oeste, Brazil. Both airplanes sustained substantial damage by impact forces and a postcrash fire. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for either flight. The airline transport pilot and 1 passenger in PT-NKA, and the airline transport pilot and 1 passenger in PT-NIR were fatally injured. The flights departed SDAM at about 1120 UTC.

Witnesses on the ground stated they observed both airplanes approaching each other when the midair collision occurred.

According to Sergeant Carlos Locatelli, the PM of Piracicaba (SP), which received the first information about the accident, witnesses said the collision was frontal. Residents interviewed by EPTV reported, however, that the wings touched the side and then fell. The Fire Department of Santa Bárbara D'Oeste sent four trucks to the site and the garrison of Americana (SP) plus a vehicle to fight the fire.

The management of the Aero Club of America, the nearest area where the the crash happened, said some aircraft departed the airport flew through the region, but could not confirm whether those involved in the accident left the place.

'I only saw a wing falling'The trucker Ricaro Paulo Silveira de Souza was standing near the cane field. "When I heard the pop I left the cabin to see what it was and just saw a wing fall," he said. Souza also reported that he saw a wing explode in the air.


"I had two aircraft side by side and beat wing to wing," said Julio Cesar Prestes, who works near the crash site. "I looked at the sky and suddenly I only saw the two planes down," he reported. The businessman said that Henry Lucas was doing track in the vicinity and also heard the noise. "We looked back and saw an aircraft 'screwing'" he said.
