Police department's "eye in the sky" program proves successful

A program launched by the Somerset Police Department is helping officers fight crime from a new angle.

The police department now uses a "gyroplane," which is similar to a helicopter to patrol Somerset.
Officers say the gyroplane increases the safety of the officers, the suspects and the public.

The police department is the first law enforcement agency in the country to test the gyroplane and they are already calling it a success.

Surprisingly, the benefits that officers can get from the high views come at a low cost.

Lt. Shannon Smith says the gyroplane's simplicity and safety makes for an excellent way to patrol on the ground from the skies.
