Newcastle Airport (UK) set to offer flights to Florida

DISNEY WORLD and the sunshine state are coming a step closer to home for Tyneside holidaymakers.  Tour operator Cosmos Holidays announced today it will operate holidays and flights direct from Newcastle International Airport to Orlando, Florida, next summer.

Florida is the most popular long-haul tourist destination from the UK, with world-famous attractions, including Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios, numerous shopping malls and stunning white sandy beach resorts.

Flights will operate to Orlando’s Sanford Airport on a Monarch A330 aircraft, departing from Newcastle on Tuesdays and returning in the early hours of Wednesday morning from May until August next year.

Dave Laws, chief executive at Newcastle International, said: “We are delighted that the Monarch Holiday Group has invested in the North East.

“This news means more families from the region can fly from Newcastle Airport directly to Orlando, Florida, next summer while saving considerable time and money.

“We know that over 20,000 people from the region travel to Orlando from other UK airports, and it’s great news that Cosmos now offer this to give our customers more choice when travelling from their local airport.  “Florida is an incredible destination with something to offer all ages.

“We look forward to seeing many happy customers in the terminal as they jet off to enjoy an exciting trip to Disney World, Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter, or a relaxing sun-filled break to Palm Beach or Key West.”

Hugh Morgan, managing director of tour operations for Monarch Travel Group said: “We are delighted to be able to add to the choice of flights to Florida from Newcastle by offering both package holidays and flight-only options for those wanting to travel independently with a fly-drive holiday.

“As Florida is a very popular destination with our customers in the North East, we wanted to be able to offer the convenience and flexibility of flying from their local airport.”

The announcement comes hot on the heels of news that airline Jet2 are introducing new flights from Newcastle to Mediterranean sunspots, creating more than 100 jobs.

As reported in the Chronicle on Tuesday, the company is bringing another plane to the airport and launching flights to Bodrum in Turkey, Rome and Venice in Italy, and Reus in Spain from next year.  The double boost of good news, in the midst of continuing economic gloom, has been seen as a sign of the airline industry’s faith in Tyneside as a growing market place.

The airport contributes around £400m a year to the region’s economy.
