New York City: Family of woman killed in East River helicopter crash call pilot a hero

The family of the woman killed in the helicopter that crashed into the East River this week hailed the pilot for his heroic actions, according to a report in the New York Post

Pilot Paul Dudley, director of the Linden Airport, was taking off from the helipad on East 34th Street with four tourists from Australia, when his craft crashed Tuesday afternoon.

Dudley was carrying Sonia Marra, who was visiting New York to celebrate her 40th birthday, along with her parents and her partner. In the crash, Nicholson was killed and the other three passengers were injured. Dudley was not hurt.

“The pilot, Paul Dudley, is a family friend who acted with great bravery in the rescue,” said a statement released by Marra's father and sisters, according to the New York Post story.

“We are a strong family, and will cope with our loss in our own way.”

According to the New York Daily News, Marra was trapped inside the helicopter and died. The crash left her parents and partner in critical condition.

According to a source close to the investigation, Marra's stepfather, 71-year-old Paul Nicholson, was sitting beside Dudley. Her mother, Harriet, and partner Helen Tamaki, were sitting with her in the back.

"He's very distraught," a source told the Daily News, referring to Dudley. "He says he just lost control and it crashed in the water."

Harriet Nicholson and Tamaki remained in critical condition Friday at Bellevue Hospital, with Paul Nicholson keeping vigil over them, according to the New York Post story.
