More strikes to hit Qantas

Qantas is gearing up for yet another fight, with engineers planning to walk off the job for four hours tomorrow.

Line engineers will take part in four-hour work stoppages in Sydney from 3pm, Melbourne from 5pm and Brisbane from 4pm.

The industrial action is part of an ongoing dispute with the airline over conditions, pay and job security.

A spokeswoman for the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association says the union has increased the strike action, from the usual one-hour stoppages, because negotiations with the airline are still stalling.

The airline plans to lay off Australian-based staff and shift some of Qantas's international operations offshore. The union wants job security clauses inserted into new wage contracts.

On Friday, 17 Qantas flights were cancelled and another 29 delayed, even though the Transport Workers Union had called off planned industrial action.

Last week, Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce revealed he had received death threats, though this was dismissed by some unionists as a publicity stunt.

NSW Police are investigating the threats.
