GILFORD — A pilot was unharmed and his passenger sustained only superficial injuries when their plane crashed short of the runway at Laconia Municipal Airport and landed in a thicket of trees.

The crash occurred when the single-engine Mooney aircraft was on its final approach just before 4 p.m. Monday, Laconia Airport Manager Marv Everson said Tuesday.

“The pilot became disoriented by the blinding sun, which was in his eyes, and he was lower than he thought he was,” Everson said.

On the approach the plane had flown over the top of Patrick’s Place mini mall when seconds later it clipped the top of a maple tree, causing the aircraft to flip over and crash upside down with its tail toward the main runway in a thickly wooded area just east of the runway.

Everson declined to identify the pilot, except to say he was from New Hampshire. The passenger was the pilot’s teenage son, he said.

The pilot was uninjured, but firefighters needed to extricate him from the aircraft because his feet were stuck in the cockpit pedals, Gilford Fire Rescue Chief Steve Carrier said. The passenger received a cut on his arm. Both men were checked out by Fire Rescue paramedics at the scene, but otherwise declined treatment, Carrier said.

Fire personnel had difficulty finding the aircraft because of the thick vegetation, Carrier said.

Everson said the aircraft was a total loss as a result of the crash. He said the plane remained in the woods, waiting for the Federal Aviation Administration to give permission for it to be moved to a location where the FAA could conduct a closer investigation.

Everson and Carrier said there was no fire and that no fuel leaked from the aircraft.

Mid-air collision involving gliders on Mt. Diablo on Saturday, November 7th

Here’s what a witness had to say:

You have to zoom in (on the pictures), but you can see the gliders, a parachute and the body of the pilot. I was out at Knobcone Point on Mt. Diablo, when we saw two odd looking and sounding gliders, collide head on. The first glider circled around the summit and came back towards us….we were facing East/SE on Knobcone Point. The glider sounded like it had an electric or something else non-gasoline engine. I took some photos, but I only had a 15-30mm lens with me today. If you zoom in on the photo you can see the two gliders, one still circling above the parachutist, the other plane out of control heading to earth, and a small speck that was the other pilot (we think). Spoke to a Ranger and they found the parachutist and were transporting them to a hospital. Click on each photo for a much larger view of the photos, and to see the two planes and at least one person with a parachute.

UPDATE: The FAA released the following information to Claycord.com:

Two Schleicher gliders collided in mid-air over Mt. Diablo State Park, around 12:50 p.m. Saturday. Only the pilots were on board and each parachuted out of the plane. The gliders tail numbers are N81KP and N18MA. The FAA and NTSB will investigate.

The condition of the pilots is unknown at this time.
