Incident occurred October 05, 2018 at Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (KXNA), Benton County, Arkansas

HIGHFILL, Arkansas (KNWA) - Fire trucks were put on standby Friday afternoon as a private airplane made an emergency landing due to low fuel, according to Executive Director at XNA Kelly Johnson.

Johnson said the plane made a safe landing without incident. She said that it's a common protocol for the fire department at the airport to be put on standby in case of an emergency.

She said the plane radioed to the air traffic control tower about the fuel issue prompting the emergency protocol.

The pilot reported that he had been working at an off-airport site installing concrete columns and then departed from the site in the tailwheel-equipped airplane. During takeoff from the field, he turned to avoid trees at the end of the field and impacted a concrete column.

Examination of the wreckage revealed that the right wing and fuselage were substantially damaged.

The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation. He stated he had experience taking off on grass, but he had not left enough room to gain sufficient altitude for obstacle clearance.

MYAKKA CITY, Fla. (WFLA) - Manatee County sheriff's deputies were on scene investigating the crash of a small, single-engine plane in the Myakka City area on Thursday.

The crash occurred off Rocky Creek Ranch.

According to the sheriff’s office, Dennis Hertenstein, 44, owns his own plane and flew to Myakka City from Lutz to operate an excavator.

After the day’s work, Hertenstein taxied out to a corner of a large pasture and began his takeoff run back toward the direction of the concrete pilings where he had been working.

He somehow did not get proper altitude and the plane’s wings were wobbling up and down.

He cleared the barbwire fence of the pasture, but clipped the right wing of the plane on a pile of concrete.

Hertenstein’s plane “cartwheeled” and landed about 50 feet away from the pile.

Hertenstein sustained multiple leg fractures, but managed to crawl out of the plane.

He was taken by coworkers to a safe area where EMS arrived and he was flown to a hospital.

MYAKKA CITY - A 44-year-old man was injured in a plane crash Thursday afternoon near Myakka City, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The man flew his plane from Lutz and spent the day performing tests on concrete pilings with an excavator on a construction site off of Taylor Road in Myakka City.

After his work was done for the day, the man began his takeoff run from the corner of a large pasture, flying back toward the direction of the pilings, according to Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

However, the plane did not achieve proper altitude, and its wings began wobbling up and down. The plane cleared a barbwire fence at the edge of the pasture, but the right wing was then clipped on one of the concrete pilings. The plane cartwheeled, landing about 50 feet southeast of the piling.

The crash occurred at 1:56 p.m.

The man sustained multiple leg fractures but was able to crawl out of the plane. Co-workers then moved him to a safe area until help arrived.

Deputies and EMS crews were on scene by 2:23 p.m., and the man was then transported by Bayflight helicopter.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been informed of the crash, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
