The pilot of a Cessna 172S Skyhawk SP was injured during an attempted landing when the aircraft veered into the grass at the Blue Ridge Airport in Martinsville.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, and the pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft, FAA Public Affairs Specialist Rick Breitenfeldt wrote by email.

The FAA does not release the names of pilots or passengers, but the tail number of the aircraft, N1089D, indicates the airplane is registered to Heavy Metal Air LLC in Farmingdale, New York.

Heavy Metal Air is a maintenance repair company for aircraft with operations in New York and also in Charlotte, North Carolina and Atlanta.

The Horsepasture Volunteer Fire Department, Horsepasture Volunteer Rescue Squad, Henry County Sheriff’s Department, and the Virginia State Police responded to the crash.

The Cessna had come to a stop in a grassy area at a right angle to the runway. The nose of the aircraft was in the ground, but the fuselage and wings all appeared to be intact.

Briedtenfeldt wrote that the FAA would investigate the crash.

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — The Phoenix Fire Department said no one was injured after a small aircraft landed on Pinnacle Peak Road in north Phoenix on Tuesday.

The plane landed upright and safely.

12 News spoke to the owner of the plane who said the plane was rented out to a pilot who was trying to build up flying hours. The owner said the plane had enough fuel for a two hour flight but the plane ran out of fuel when the pilot was on the way back to the airport.

The owner said they're now awaiting word from the Federal Aviation Administration to see if they can take off from Pinnacle Peak Road or have to load the plane on the back of a flat bed truck.

At the end of last month, at least three small aircraft crashed in different parts of the state, resulting in multiple deaths.

An Oklahoma pilot was involved in a plane crash at the Cleveland Municipal Airport, located at 17699 FM 787 East, around 3 p.m., Monday, May 3.

According to a statement from the City of Cleveland, the pilot, Darrell Smith of Duncan, Okla., was bringing the plane in for repairs when it experienced total electrical failure.

Smith was forced to perform a belly land of the Beech 95-B55 (T42A). With credit to the pilot’s skill, he was able to safely land without any injuries to himself.

Johnny Whitson with Lone Star Aircraft, located at Cleveland Municipal Airport, responded to the crash, along with other local tenants at the facility. Together they aided the pilot.

Saddle Creek Towing responded to aid in lifting the aircraft so the landing gear could be cranked down.

The crash caused the airport runway to be temporarily closed. By 7:15 p.m., it was reopened for traffic.
