Aircraft Damage: Substantial
Defining Event: Landing gear collapse
Injuries: 2 None
Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General Aviation - Personal

The pilot reported that rain showers were present in the vicinity of his destination airport, so he diverted and landed at a nearby airport. During the approach, the pilot felt the airplane was being pushed forward and saw an increase in indicated airspeed and nose down attitude. He continued the approach and upon touchdown, the airplane landed hard on the nosewheel first and after a subsequent bounce, he initiated a go-around. He then re-entered the pattern, approached the same runway and upon touchdown, the nose landing gear collapsed, and airplane exited the runway to the left into a ditch.

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the nose landing gear tunnel.

The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

The automated weather observation station located on the airport reported that, about 7 minutes prior to the accident, the wind was from 100° at 7 knots. The airplane landed on runway 32.

The pilot added that he believed the airplane's nose landing gear was damage during the initial landing. He further stated that, after landing, the windsock was discovered to be damaged, and not indicating wind direction properly. However, the airport's AWOS was accessible by aircraft radio.

Analysis

The flight instructor reported that, during approach at a low level, due to "wind shear," the tailwheel-equipped airplane suddenly lost altitude. The instructor increased the engine power to full, but the airplane touched down "harder than normal." The airplane impacted the airstrip with a side load, and the left wing and left landing gear separated from the airplane, which then slid to a stop and came to rest upright.

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing.

The instructor reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

The instructor reported that the wind was from 180° and light and variable at 7 to 10 knots.

Probable Cause and Findings

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:
The flight instructor's improper landing flare and failure to maintain a proper descent rate during approach, which resulted in a hard landing.

Findings

Aircraft
Descent rate - Not attained/maintained (Cause)
Landing flare - Not attained/maintained (Cause)

Injuries: 2 None
Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General Aviation - Instructional

Analysis

According to the flight instructor in the light sport airplane, the pilot in the left seat had not flown for a while and was receiving instruction to complete a flight review. The airplane was equipped with a single control stick. During the landing flare, the pilot applied forward stick, and the airplane impacted the runway hard. The nose landing gear and the right main landing gear collapsed. The airplane exited the right side of the runway and came to a stop in the grass safety area.

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the engine mounts and lower fuselage.

The instructor asserted that he should have refused to instruct in an airplane with only one control stick.

Both pilots reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Probable Cause and Findings

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:
The pilot's improper landing flare, which resulted in a hard landing. Contributing to the accident was the flight instructor's improper decision to provide instruction in an airplane with only one control stick.

Analysis

According to the student pilot, he was performing touch-and-go takeoffs and landings following his first cross-country solo flight. He reported that, during his last landing, the airplane touched down "all the way to the right side of the runway," so he aborted the landing. He shut off the carburetor heat and applied power, and the airplane's nose pitched up and turned left. The airplane impacted the grass safety area on the left side of the runway in a nose-down attitude. The airplane came to rest inverted after striking a drainage culvert and sustained substantial damage to the right-wing lift strut and aileron.

The student reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Probable Cause and Findings

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:
The student pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the aborted landing.

Findings
