Ann Arbor, Michigan — A single-engine airplane made an emergency landing at Ann Arbor Municipal Airport on Sunday but the plane was not damaged and no one was hurt.

The plane landed in a field at the airport, 801 Airport Drive, around 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon, said Pittsfield Fire Lt. Dave Derksen.

The plane was being used for an instructional flight and lost power right after taking off. The flight instructor landed in a soybean field west of the runway, and the occupants were unhurt, Derksen said.

"It took off from the runway, lost power, the instructor took over the controls and landed it in a beanfield with no damage to the aircraft or the people inside," Derksen said.

The cause of the engine failure is unknown. The Federal Aviation Administration investigation investigates all crashes, civilian and commercial.

Pittsfield Township, Michigan  (WXYZ) — No one was injured after a pilot was forced to make an emergency landing at the Ann Arbor Municipal Airport Sunday afternoon (September 11).

Pittsfield Township Police and Fire departments responded to the airport around 3 p.m. on reports of a plane crashing on airport property.

Officers found the plane, located west of the airport in a bean field on airport property.

The pilot and passenger in the plane were not hurt from the crash. Investigators say that the plane did not crash, but rather executed an emergency landing after losing power moments after taking off from the runway.

Officers say that the Cessna 152 did not sustain any damage in the incident. Airport officials did contact the Federal Aviation Administration regarding the incident.

BRANCH COUNTY, Michigan — The pilot and passenger of a Waco 2T-1A-2 aircraft escaped serious injury Friday afternoon, crashing on landing at the Branch County Memorial Airport.

Pilot Jerry Kemp was from Waco Aircraft Corporation in Battle Creek, owner of the aircraft. In the open-air cockpit with him, student John Watts. Both went to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital for evaluation after the aircraft flipped over and came to rest upside down.

According to airport manager Joe Best, both men were hanging by shoulder harnesses with their heads just above the ground. LifeCare checked out both men. "I think they suspected one had a mild concussion. I didn't see any lacerations. Both men were walking around after the crash," Best said.

Best notified the National Transportation Safety Board, and a representative was due at the airport over the weekend to determine the cause of the crash.

The Waco 2T-1A-2 came in from the west on runway 7-25, the long main runway. "But they were landing on the grass off to the side of the asphalt runway. It looks like the gear dug in and flipped them over," Best said. Because of the runway height, the plane was not visible from U.S. 12.

Best, a pilot himself, said small rear-wheeled planes, called "tail draggers," often use the mowed strip on the side for landings and takeoffs, as they would on grass fields.

Best said manufacturing company uses the Branch County airport for test flights, demonstrations, and training away from the busier Battle Creek location of the manufacturing plant. The particular plane is the company flight trainer.

Waco hand builds two models of biplanes based on pre-World War II designs with modern safety updates and comfort features.

When the crash was reported at 2:46 p.m., Coldwater and Bronson Fire units responded along with Branch County Sheriff's deputies.

SEELEY LAKE, Montana – Just after 3:15 p.m. Saturday, September 3, emergency responders were dispatched to a plane crash reported south of the airport. Within 15 minutes of the report emergency responders where on scene were a small, single engine aircraft was found in the trees in the Double Arrow Ranch Homestead Commons area. There were two occupants in the plane. They both sustained injuries and were flown via two Life Flight Network helicopters to Missoula.

Seeley Lake Fire Chief and Incident Commander Dave Lane said nine Seeley Lake Fire Department volunteers responded to the Homestead Commons off Dolly Varden Drive on the Double Arrow Ranch. Seeley-Swan Search and Rescue volunteers and local law enforcement were also on scene as well as a few bystanders.

The aircraft was nose down in the trees. Lane said one of the occupants was on the ground next to the aircraft while the second occupant was trapped.

"Our focus with patient care was to get that first person moving to the hospital and work on extricating the second one," Lane said.

It took more than an hour to extricate the second occupant from the aircraft.

They were both flown to Missoula. Their names, where they were from and condition were not released.

"Everyone knew their assignments and carried them out and did a really good job for us," Lane said. "Everybody who was involved thank you very much."

The Double Arrow Homestead Commons was closed to the public Saturday afternoon. Following the investigators' visit to the crash site on Sunday, the wreckage was removed. The Commons Area was reopened to the public Sunday evening. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

On September 5, 2022, at 1711 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 182P airplane, N58807, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Cleveland, Tennessee. The pilot and passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) data revealed that the flight departed Arlington Municipal Airport (GKY), Arlington, Texas, at 1012 central daylight time (cdt) and arrived at Fletcher Field Airport (CKM), Clarksdale, Mississippi, at 1300 cdt. The accident flight departed CKM at 1348 cdt with an intended destination of Asheville Regional Airport (AVL), Asheville, North Carolina. The pilot proceeded eastbound on course toward AVL and climbed to 9,000 ft mean sea level (msl).

At 1706, the airplane entered a left turn as the flight approached an area of weather. The pilot completed two full 360-degree turns momentarily returning to a northeasterly course. About 1711:10, the airplane entered a right turn from an approximate altitude of 9,075 ft msl. The final data point was recorded at 1711:32 with a corresponding altitude of 7,200 ft msl.

The initial tree impact was located about 0.56 miles northwest of the final data point. Elevation of the accident site was approximately 830 ft, and estimated tree heights were 80 ft above ground level (agl). The debris path was about 480 ft long and oriented on a north-northeast (020°) bearing. The airframe was fragmented. The engine and propeller assemblies were separated and located within the debris path. Both exhibited damage consistent with impact forces.

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina (WLOS) — A local doctor and his wife have been identified as the victims in a plane that crashed Monday in eastern Tennessee.

On Tuesday, the Bradley County (Tennessee) medical examiner confirmed William Edward Gist was the pilot and his wife Beth Ann Gist was a passenger in the Cessna 182P Skylane that went down near Chattanooga about 5:15 p.m. Monday.

Mountain Flyers Flying Club, a not-for-profit organization based at Asheville Regional Airport, owns the plane. The organization's president Bill Keith said the physician ran into bad weather.

Mountain Area Health Education Center OB-GYN Department Chair Dr. Beth Buys said Gist was the OB-GYN residency program director for MAHEC.

“This is a big shock,” Buys said. “Dr. Gist was one of the most well-loved people I have ever worked with. He was someone who was dedicated and compassionate, sharing every bit of themselves with our community.”

Gist, she said, had worked at MAHEC since 2019.

"Beth Gist served as the Clinical Director for Mountain Area Pregnancy Services in Asheville, North Carolina. She was a light to our organization and well-loved by our team. Beth's skillset and giftings were exemplary, and such a gift to our organization. Her strong Christian faith allowed her to love our clients deeply, and to encourage clients, staff, and volunteers. She provided medical oversight for 3 clinics. MAHEC has been a long-term medical partner of ours, as we often refer medical clients for OB care. We grieve their loss, alongside their family and the MAHEC family," said Kristi Brown, Executive Director of Mountain Area Pregnancy Services.

Keith said Gist, a well-trained pilot, was the first club member to die in a crash.

“We knew he loved to fly,” Buys said. “He was just so excited to be able to see his family (in Dallas), to use a skill he used and trained many hours for. He absolutely adored being in the air.”

Buys said the couple has grown children as well as two large dogs they adored.

“They were part of our community. They were very embedded in their church and sang with their choir.” Buys said. “He is from Chicago and grew up in Chicago.”

Buys said the couple loved living in the Asheville area.

“They brought love and sunshine everywhere they went,” Buys said.

Jacquelyn Hallum, who works at MAHEC, said Gist had a great sense of humor. Hallum said Gist was a huge contributor to the community, working to bring more diversity in the medical field as well as being a sincere and caring person.

“He was very much a people person,” Hallum said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash. Air flight recordings and communications with an air controller will be part of that investigation.

HART COUNTY, Georgia (WSPA) – Multiple crews recovered the body of a pilot who was killed when a plane crashed into Lake Hartwell.

We previously reported that the Beechcraft 95-B55 Baron departed Punta Gorda, Florida Saturday morning before it crashed into the lake around 12:30 p.m.

“It has been a long five days for us, going on six and I can’t imagine how long it has seemed for the family,” said Hart County Sheriff, Mike Cleveland. “Our main concern this morning is retrieving the body.”

Only one person, the pilot, was on board the aircraft when it crashed according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The Hart County Sheriff’s Office identified the pilot as 55-year-old Todd Jeffrey Carrell, of North Port, Florida.

As the hours passed Thursday, residents came and went, watching from a distance as the blue lights traveled across the water.

“I was hoping they could get the man out as soon as they could. Because you know how it is, you lose a loved one and you are not allowed to see him or whatever, I was just hoping it would go fast and things would go good,” said Steve Cheek, Hart County resident.

According to divers, the plane was entangled all week in tree limbs and debris more than 120 feet below the surface.

“We located the plane just in no time at all then the problem at all but then the problem became apparent that the depth out there, in that particular region, was over most local divers’ certification, if you will, on how deep they can dive,” said Sheriff Cleveland.

A new recovery plan was put to work Thursday using underwater lift bags to pull the plane closer to the surface. Deputies said it allowed divers to recover the pilot’s body.

The aircraft was lifted to the surface around 6 p.m. Thursday.

The recovery effort was something the Sheriff told 7NEWS he has never dealt with before.

“We have never to my knowledge, and I have been here all my life, had an aircraft to crash in the deep water,” said Sheriff Cleveland. “Our hearts go out to the family of course that it has taken this long.”

The NTSB said the cause of the crash is under investigation.

A Beechcraft 95-B55 Baron plane flown by a lone pilot crashed Saturday, Sept. 10 into Lake Hartwell near Long Point Recreation Area in Hartwell.

After impact at approximately 12:30 p.m., the plane ended up under about 120 feet of water, according to Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland, and the pilot was assumed dead.

The aircraft is registered to Todd Carrell from North Port, Florida. Agents confirmed that it took off from Punta Gorda, Florida at 9:40 a.m. Saturday with a flight plan to arrive in Anderson, South Carolina around 12:40 p.m. A time lapse on the flight tracking site FlightAware shows the pilot’s plane arriving near Anderson airport, then backtracking and circling a few times over the lake before the time lapse ends.

Cleveland said a “minimal amount” of oil leaked into the water from the plane, which was caught in an underwater tree and turned underside-up by Tuesday night.

On Tuesday evening, Hart County administrator Terrell Partain said contractors working in conjunction with the National Safety Transportation Board (NTSB) were expected to attempt to raise the plane out of the water in a recovery effort Thursday.

Cleveland said the plane needed to be carefully removed from the lake for safety reasons and as part of the crash investigation. Additionally, the body of the pilot could not be removed until the plane was recovered due to jammed doors and the plane’s depth.

“[The NTSB] is going to raise the plane and [the sheriff’s office] is going to get the body out. The body is [the sheriff’s office’s] only concern,” Cleveland said Tuesday. “[The NTSB] is going to have to raise the plane and carry it to Atlanta.”

The pilot’s flight insurance company had agreed to “pay out the policy” for the plane’s recovery process, Partain said Tuesday. He added that he did not have cost figures.

Results of the recovery process were unavailable by press time.

Cleveland said he “feels for the family.”

“They want their loved one out of that plan so they can have some closure. I understand that,” he said. “But we don’t have the capabilities to do it.”

A diving unit from Oconee County, South Carolina was assisting the Hart County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday.

Cleveland said Monday the objective to retrieve the pilot from his plane was at a “standstill.” Attempts by divers Sunday to get into the plane were unsuccessful. One diver, according to Cleveland, “got in a medical problem” Sunday. He said the diver is in stable condition.

“The National Transportation Safety Board is saying, ‘Other than getting the body out, do not disturb the plane.’ So we can’t get the body out until somebody lifts the plane up. It’s settled in the trees,” Cleveland said.

“The doors are jammed and we can’t get into the plane until it is lifted. We can’t lift the plane. We don’t have the capabilities so the NTSB is going to have to lift the plane for us to get the body.”
