The Federal Aviation Administration and National Telecommunications and Information Administration seem to have their heads in the clouds when it comes to crafting rules for the safe and acceptable use of drones.
Two years ago, Congress mandated rules by September 2015. Yet, according to The Washington Post, the FAA won't meet the deadline. Proposed rules for small drones are expected by year's end, but that one step in a rulemaking process can take years. Standards for larger drones are nonexistent.
Against that backdrop, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has urged the FAA and other entities to hurry up. He's right; air travel safety and people's privacy demand these agencies bring ideas that have been discussed for years in for a landing.
