Last year's historic runway settlement between Dania Beach and Broward County could fall apart.
On Thursday night, Dania Beach's Airport Advisory Board agreed unanimously that the city should throw out the settlement and go back to the negotiating table with Broward County, deciding how the county will compensate Dania homeowners for the noise they'll endure from the coming south runway.
The board's vote, a recommendation to the Dania Beach City Commission, comes just days after the Federal Aviation Administration gave its decision on the elements of the plan. The FAA's ruling was a complicated, nine-page document that Broward officials said they'd have their aviation lawyers analyze before opining on whether it was a deal breaker.
But it didn't take any high-priced lawyers to explain the ruling to Dania Beach's Airport Board. Board member Jay Field said they didn't like it.
If Dania city commissioners changed their minds about the settlement, Broward and Dania could be back to square one. The Dania City Commission meets Tuesday.
The runway, a second "main'' landing strip, opens in 2014 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). It's under construction now.
