MEDFORD - A private plane caught fire on a runway Sunday morning, officials said.
Emergency crews were called to Flying W Airport just before 9:30 a.m. for a report of an airplane fire, according to a news release issued Monday by the Medford Township Police Department.
The pilot, Edward R. Shultz of Lumberton, "reported the fire to have started while he was attempting to start the aircraft during his pre-flight inspection," police said.
A small fire had been contained to the plane's engine compartment, according to police. It was extinguished when crews arrived.
Nobody was injured and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
Shultz has held a private pilot license for more than eight years and is the registered owner of a 1971 Piper Cherokee, according to federal databases. It's not clear if that plane is the same one that caught fire Sunday.
Publicly available flight records show Shultz's Cherokee has made seven flights between late September and Dec. 1. Most of those flights appear to have originated or ended in the general area of Flying W Airport.
Flying W is the same airport where a helicopter crashed last year, killing a pilot and country music star Troy Gentry. A National Transportation Safety Board report issued this month found fault with maintenance on the helicopter and blamed the pilot for failing to properly execute an emergency landing procedure.
