LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - The new tower at the Lynchburg Regional Airport got a new addition on Thursday.
A crane lifted a 47,000 pound steel structure off the ground and put it on top of the main control tower building. It will serve as the air traffic control center and house weather service and communication equipment operated by air traffic controllers.
Airport Manager Mark Courtney says the move marks a culmination in the construction of the new tower. "It's been a good project, it's been a long time coming, we've had a lot of help and support with the FAA, with our Congressman Goodlatte to see it come to fruition, so we're really excited about getting it finished," said Courtney.
Construction crews expect to have the tower finished by the end of this year, however, it won't be fully operational until next spring.
Courtney says that's because the FAA has to first calibrate the equipment, inspect it and commission the tower.
