Air Force to Spray for Mosquitoes in York County, Virginia

The U.S. Air Force will spray for mosquitoes this week in York County in hopes of killing up to 95 percent of the adult mosquito population for up to two weeks.

The U.S. Air Force will be using a modified C-130 Hercules to drop Dibrom Concentrate. The plane will be flying 150 to 200 feet off the ground. Bee keepers should take special caution to cover their bees during the spraying operations, and anyone with known allergic reactions should stay indoors.

The flights will last from about 6 p.m. until dusk Tuesday through Thursday, according to a news release from the Air Force. In addition to York County, they’ll be using the aircraft to spray at Craney Island, Langley Air Force Base and some locations in Portsmouth.

About 17,000 acres in York County will be sprayed over the course of the three days.

The Air Force expects mosquito populations will be reduced for up to two weeks depending on the size of the area sprayed and how favorable conditions are on the ground for new mosquitoes to breed.
