On April 22, 2019, about 1500 eastern daylight time, an experimental amateur-built Bearhawk LSA, N289EH, sustained substantial damage after a collision with a powerline at the Holly Ridge Airport (N21), Holly Ridge, North Carolina. The private pilot received serious injuries. The airplane was privately owned and operated under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the local flight.
According to the pilot, he was on a local flight and on final approach to his destination airport N21. As he approached the airport, he noticed a line of trees. After clearing the trees, he started his decent to runway 14. While on short final to land the airplane became entangled in the powerlines and collided with the ground. In a interview with the pilot, he stated that he knew of the powerlines but thought they may have been raised. He said that he had not checked the airport/facility directory (AFD), which noted the placement and height of the powerlines.
Examination of the wreckage by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed that the airplane was substantially damaged. The airplane was intact and resting on its nose. The nose of the airplane was crushed aft and both wings displayed leading edge crush damage. He did not observe any anomalies with the flight controls.
Review of the airport's runways information revealed that the powerlines were located 50 ft from the runway 14 threshold, and were 60 ft-tall. Runway 14 had a displaced threshold with an approach slope ratio of 1:1 in order to clear the powerlines.

ONSLOW COUNTY, North Carolina (WITN) - The pilot who crashed his experimental plane nose down into the ground is in fair condition this morning.
New Hanover Regional Medical Center confirmed that Robert Barrows is a patient.
Barrows owns the Bearhawk LSA that crashed Monday afternoon at the Holly Ridge/Topsail Island Airport around 3:00 p.m.
After the crash, the plane remained verticle with its nose in the ground.
The Highway Patrol says the pilot was the only person on board and that the aircraft clipped some power lines and crashed.
Barrows, who is from Fincastle, Virginia, was airlifted to the Wilmington hospital after the crash. Col. Chris Thomas with the Onslow County Sheriff's Office said the pilot had an apparent injury to his leg or foot.
The FAA is the lead agency investigating the mishap.
