AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Two people on board a Cessna 172R Skyhawk escaped injury after they had to make an emergency landing just east of Austin airport Friday afternoon.

The Austin Fire Department says the initial call came in just after 1:30 p.m and reported a Cessna plane crashed short of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Firefighters found the Cessna 172R Skyhawk upright and intact in a grassy field off Heine Farm Road and Elroy Road. Two people on board the plane got out of the plane uninjured but they're currently being evaluated by Austin-Travis County EMS.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is waiting for the National Transportation Safety Board to arrive to assess the situation.
