F-22 sustains $1.8M in damage in Hickam landing 'mishap'

An F-22 Raptor sustained $1.8 million in damage in a landing "mishap" this morning at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, the Hawaii National Guard said. The pilot was uninjured.

The jet belongs to the 199th and 19th Fighters Squadrons and sustained damage to both horizontal stabilizers, officials said. It had been used in a flyover during a remembrance ceremony at Pearl Harbor and scraped its tail on a runway as it landed.

"The cause of the mishap is under investigation," a National Guard news release said.

Lt. Col. Charles Anthony says the jet was coming back to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam from a training exercise after taking part in the ceremony. He says the landing happened roughly 90 minutes after the flyover.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
