ORONDO — Two people were hospitalized Wednesday after a helicopter crashed onto an orchard sprayer south of Orondo while drying cherries.

The helicopter was flying about 9:20 a.m. near Weaver Road when it struck a powerline and landed on the tractor that was also working to dry the orchard, said Douglas County Undersheriff Tyler Caille.

A fire ignited as a result of the collision and destroyed the helicopter and tractor.

The pilot, a 39-year-old man from Kuna, Idaho, and the tractor driver, an 18-year-old man from East Wenatchee, were transported to Central Washington Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Caille said.

Crews from Douglas County Fire District 4 in Orondo had the fire knocked down by 10:09 a.m., said spokeswoman Kay McKellar.

The crash caused a power outage to 1,400 Douglas County PUD customers from Orondo to Beebe and on the Waterville Plateau, according to the PUD. Power was restored about 10:30 a.m.
