On July 24, 2021, about 0835 central daylight time, a Piper PA-18-150 airplane, N83411, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Larimore, North Dakota. The pilot was seriously injured; the passenger was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
The pilot reported that the preflight inspection and run-up were normal. Immediately after lifting off, the airplane began turning left and did not seem to be responding to his flight control inputs. The airplane did not climb as expected, and it subsequently entered an aerodynamic stall and impacted a tree line.
The airplane came to rest in a nose down attitude within the tree line. The airframe sustained damage to the fuselage and both wings.

GRAND FORKS — A weekend plane crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Two men were injured in the Saturday, July 24, crash near Larimore, N.D.
Pilot Todd Yahna was taken to a hospital by private vehicle for an injured knee, and Paul Mutch was treated at the scene for scrapes and lacerations, according to a report from the Grand Forks County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies were dispatched to the Larimore Airport at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday. The reporting party told deputies that she heard a plane taking off and then about two minutes later thought she heard a crash. She could not see any smoke or flames.
Deputies found an open hangar with no plane in it and two pickup trucks parked outside. Deputies found that the trucks belonged to Yahna and Mutch. A responding paramedic was able to give deputies Yahna's phone number, according to the report.
Deputies called the number, and Yahna picked up and told them he was involved in a plane crash and gave his location. Deputies requested medical and fire crews, and began rendering aid to Yahna and Mutch.
The deputies also noted a yellow 1976 Piper Super Cub resting in the trees, nose down, with heavy damage to the right wing and the cockpit.
Yahna later told deputies they were taking off to go to the Fly In Breakfast in Northwood, but when they took off they felt the plane failing to gain altitude. The plane began to bank left, and he was unable to get the plane leveled or gain enough speed to clear the trees.
Fargo, North Dakota – An aircraft crash near Larimore on Saturday is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration.
A Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub crashed in a forested location immediately after departing the Larimore Municipal Airport about 7:30 a.m., according to FAA authorities.
At the time, there were two individuals on board.
The Sheriff’s Office of Grand Forks County was sent to the 20 Barrett Avenue area.
A woman, who reported the incident, stated she heard a plane taking off. She said about two minutes later, she heard what sounded like a crash, but did not see any smoke or flames.
A deputy searched the area and later responded to the Larimore Municipal Airport, where he noticed an open hangar with no plane inside.
Two pickup trucks were found parked near the hangar.
It was later discovered they were registered to Todd Yahna and Paul Mutch.
The deputy was able to get in contact with Yahna, at which point, he explained he was involved in a plane crash.
He stated the two men were headed to Northwood and as the plane took they felt it was not gaining altitude.
Yahna said he was unable to get the plane leveled or gain speed to avoid the trees.
The crash was discovered in a line of trees near the 3700 block of County Road 4. Emergency crews were able to locate Yahna and Mutch.
Yahna suffered from a knee injury while Mutch had a laceration above his right eye.
Also, both passengers endured several cuts and scrapes on the arms and legs.
Yahna was taken to Sanford Hospital in Fargo.
