Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General Aviation - Personal
On May 25, 2019, about 1346 central daylight time, a Champion 8KCAB airplane, N68557, was substantially damaged during a forced landing to a cornfield near Fredericksburg, Texas. The pilot and passenger sustained minor injuries. The personal flight was conducted under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and it is unknown if a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) flight plan had been filed for the flight.
According to the pilot, the annual inspection had just been completed on the airplane. The pilot flew the airplane on the morning of the accident, following the completion of the maintenance, and stated that there were no issues or anomalies with the airplane during that flight.
The pilot reported that during cruise flight, on the second flight of the day, the engine started running rough and lost power. The pilot diverted to a nearby airfield but landed short of the intended runway in a cornfield. During the forced landing the airplane collided with tree stumps and nosed over. The wing and empennage were substantially damaged.

This is what Mike Busch refers to as a Maintenance-Induced Failure. I'd really like to know what the outcome of this investigation yields, because it seems likely the A&P has some responsibility here. As a general rule, I fly the first 10 hours after annual solo in case of issues like this.
