Aircraft: Great Lakes 2T1A
Injuries: 2 None
Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General Aviation - Personal
On March 14, 2019, about 1750 Pacific daylight time, a Great Lakes 2T-1A airplane, N101GL, was substantially damaged when a primary flight control failed during initial climb shortly after takeoff from Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport (MYF), San Diego, California. The private pilot and the sole passenger were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the local flight, which was being operated in accordance with Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91, and a flight plan was not filed. The personal flight departed MYF about 5 minutes prior to the accident.
In a telephone interview with a National Transportation Safety Board aircraft accident investigator, the pilot reported that shortly after taking off from runway 28R at MRY, he observed that the upper left wing panel's aileron had become detached from the wing's trailing edge at its inboard attach point. The pilot subsequently landed uneventfully on runway 28R. A postaccident examination of the aileron's failed inboard hinge strap revealed that the failure allowed the aileron to freely strike the respective wing, which resulted in substantial damage to the rib that forms the outboard edge of the aileron cut out area of the wing. The hinge strap will be sent to the NTSB Materials Laboratory in Washington, D.C., for examination.
