PEORIA — A man who tried to ram a car into the Peoria international airport terminal last weekend has been released from a local hospital, police said Monday.Following that unsuccessful ramming attempt, the man might have boarded an empty, secured airplane that was parked at one of the terminal gates, a police report suggested.
Justin T. Deemie, 27, of of 1115 E. Elmhurst Ave. in Peoria had been hospitalized at UnityPoint Health-Methodist since his arrest early Saturday.
Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell said Deemie was released from Methodist about noon Monday and booked into the county jail.
Demmie’s charges include home invasion, aggravated battery, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, criminal trespass, criminal damage to government-supported property and resisting a peace officer.
His bond was set over the weekend at $500,000, meaning he would have to post $50,000 to be released from jail. The most serious charge, home invasion, has a 30-year maximum prison term.
It’s likely Deemie will appear Tuesday in Peoria County Circuit Court, where he could talk to an attorney and possibly have his bond reduced.
Shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, Deemie drove a 2005 Ford Escape onto airport property, Asbell said. Once inside the terminal, Deemie accessed a restricted, secured area.
A sheriff’s department police report stated Deemie ran directly to a roll-up door that leads to the Transportation Security Administration baggage screening area. He pulled up the door and slid under it.
Deemie used a similar door to access the baggage carousel area, the report stated. From there, he eventually opened a door on a plane parked at a gate and entered it.
After that, Deemie continued to run through the terminal and jumped a fence on its east side, according to the report. Sheriff’s deputies apprehended a struggling Deemie in the airport parking lot.
Deemie’s adventures in the secured area were documented on video surveillance, which the sheriff’s deputy who filed the report watched.
A seal on the plane door Deemie opened still was visible when officers inspected it, according to the report. Plane doors apparently are sealed after an aircraft is secured overnight.
A broken seal can indicate the plane has been tampered with, but nothing suspicious was found, the report stated.
Planes were parked at airport gates, ready to depart first thing Saturday morning, as scheduled. About a half-dozen flights were delayed or canceled that day.
The car Deemie drove to the airport was reported stolen following a home invasion about 3 a.m. in an apartment building at 248 E. Oak Cliff Court in Peoria, according to Asbell.
A redacted Peoria Police Department report stated Deemie was a visitor to the apartments, where one of his nephews resides. Deemie demanded the nephew surrender keys to his vehicle.
A yelling Deemie said he needed to talk to his uncle in Florida and needed a ride to the airport or a train station, the report stated. The nephew refused to hand over the keys and told Deemie to go home.
Instead, Deemie broke down a neighbor’s door, fought the resident for her keys, stole her car and drove it to the airport, according to the report.
The nephew said Deemie had suffered a stroke recently at his construction job and hasn’t been the same since then, the report stated.
Video surveillance revealed Deemie drove across sidewalks and landscaping at the airport, but there was no damage inside or outside the terminal.
