An American Airlines flight diverted to Bermuda because of a possible fire in the early hours of this morning.

The plane, which was carrying 201 people from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York to Brazil, made an emergency landing at L.F. Wade International Airport shortly after 12.40am.

Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service helped evacuate all passengers and carried out a search of the rear cargo hole, where the fire was thought to be located. The plane had 156,000 pounds of fuel on board.

Ten fire vehicles and 12 firefighters were at the scene to deal with the issue.

This morning, Skyport confirmed the plane landed safely and there were no injuries.

Most passengers remained at the airport overnight and were rebooked on American Airlines scheduled flights to JFK and Miami this morning, although some chose to book into hotels and remain on the island while alternative flight arrangements were made.
