Mexican airliner Volaris will launch its nonstop, low-fare route from Mexico City to San Antonio International Airport on Friday.
The Mexico City-based airline will fly passengers between the two cities daily, said Juliana Ramirez, Volaris ancillary revenue manager, in an interview Thursday. Introductory fares for round-trip tickets start at $205.
San Antonio’s proximity to Mexico and its large Hispanic population made the city a “key Hispanic market” for Volaris, Ramirez said.
The low-cost flights are aimed at residents in both cities with family members and friends in the other, but the company also hopes to pick up leisure and business travelers, Ramirez said.
Volaris joins Aeromexico, InterJet and Delta in offering nonstop routes to Mexico City from San Antonio International Airport. The company also operates a nonstop route from San Antonio to Guadalajara.
The Mexican airline company also launched a nonstop route from George Bush International Airport in Houston to Mexico City this year and has nonstop flights from Guadalajara and Mexico City to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
The San Antonio airport has been beefing up its offerings of nonstop routes within the past several months, operating as a hub for 38 nonstop flights to destinations in the U.S. and Mexico.
Denver-based Frontier Airlines announced in August the low-cost airline will fly passengers direct to Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C. and Ontario International Airport east of Los Angeles beginning in October. Frontier previously launched nonstop, year-round routes to New Orleans, Phoenix, San Diego, Chicago and Philadelphia.
The San Antonio International Airport logged record traffic in July with more than 848,000 passengers, almost 6 percent more than in July 2016, the airport said earlier this month.
More than 5.2 million passengers have traveled through San Antonio International Airport as of Sept. 1, a 4.4 percent increase from the same period last year, the airport said.
