A drone was spotted flying over the fires in the Eclipse Complex in the Klamath National Forest, the U.S. Forest Service reported Thursday.
“Even a tiny drone can cause a serious or fatal accident if it collides with firefighting aircraft,” the release states. “In most situations, if drones are spotted near a wildfire, firefighting aircraft must land due to safety concerns.”
Drones that are not part of firefighting efforts can delay operations and can allow fires to increase in size.
The Eclipse Fire as of Thursday had burned 40,500 acres and four out of the five fires in the complex were 0 percent contained.
The largest of the fires in the Prescott Fire, which was 19,000 acres.
There are 1,095 personnel assigned to the Eclipse Complex fires.
Wednesday night “cold ash fell on Happy Camp from the Prescott Fire, a distance of about ten miles,” according to the release.
One-hour highway closures are in effect as a result of the firefighting efforts. State Route 96 is closed in the morning and in the evenings from 7 to 8 a.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. to allow for fire traffic.
