FALL RIVER MILLS, Calif. - A California Highway Patrol aircraft was flying from Alturas to Redding on Saturday when it noticed an aircraft that had crash landed at Totten Air Field in Fall River Mills.

CHP Officer Andrew Lockwood landed his aircraft to assist the pilot and passenger.

The aircraft, a 1968 Cessna 185 Skywagon, had been purchased three days before the crash by the pilot, Jerry Jones, 59. Officials noted that Jones has been a certified pilot for at least two years. Jones was flying with Heather Jay, 39, who has been a pilot since 2009 and a certified flight instructor since 2015. Jones and Jay are both residents of Butte County.

According to the pair, just after 1 p.m., Jones had successfully landed the aircraft on the runway. However, as the plane began to slow down, a gust of wind from the southeast hit the aircraft on the right side. Jones attempted to counteract the wind, but the aircraft performed a sudden "ground loop" and landed on one side.

This crash collapsed the left landing gear, left wing and propeller. Both Jones and Jay were able to walk way from the accident without injury.

The California Highway Patrol is used to checking on traffic accidents, but a CHP pilot Saturday took the agency's mission one step further when he landed to assist another pilot who had an accident at the Fall River airport.

Officer Andrew Lockwood was flying a CHP aircraft from Alturas to Redding when he spotted what appeared to be a plane accident about 1:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.

Lockwood landed at the Totten Air Field in Fall River Mills to help the pilot and his passenger, then notified deputies who took over the investigation.

Pilot Jerry Jones, 59, said he had bought the 1968 Cessna 185 Skywagon three days ago and has been a certified pilot for two years. He was flying with passenger Heather Jay, 39, who has been a pilot since 2009 and a certified flight instructor for about two years.

Jay said Jones made a "very nice" landing on the runway just after 1 p.m., but as the plane began to slow down a strong gust of wind pushed against the plane's right side.

Jones used his brake and left rudder to try to control the plane, but the wind caused the aircraft to make a ground loop and land on its side, the sheriff's office said.

Jones and Jay were able to walk away uninjured, but the plane's left landing gear, left wing and propeller were damaged.

On Saturday, May 27, 2017, at 1:13 p.m. a California Highway Patrol aircraft was flying from Alturas to Redding. As the CHP aircraft flew over Totten Air Field in Fall River Mills, California, the officer saw what appeared to be an aircraft accident on the airfield. CHP Officer Andrew Lockwood landed his aircraft to assist the pilot and passenger. Officer Lockwood then notified dispatch, at which time the Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation.

The aircraft was a 1968 Cessna 185 Skywagon, which had just been purchased three days prior by the pilot in this incident, a Jerry Jones (age 59). Jones has been a certified pilot for at least two years. Jones’ passenger was Heather Jay (age 39). Jay has also been a pilot since 2009 and a certified flight instructor since 2015. Both Jones and Jay are residents of Butte County.

Sometime just after 1:00 PM, Jones had successfully landed the aircraft on the runway. Jay had described the landing as “very nice.” However, as the plane began to decelerate, a gust of wind from the southeast hit the aircraft on the right side. Jones attempted to counteract the wind by utilizing both the left rudder and brake, but the aircraft performed a sudden “Ground Loop” and landed on one side. This collapsed the left landing gear, left wing and propeller. Jones and Jay were able to walk away from the accident without injury.
