NTSB investigators used data provided by various entities, including, but not limited to, the Federal Aviation Administration and/or the operator and did not travel in support of this investigation to prepare this aircraft accident report.
The pilot reported that, during approach, the sun was in his eyes and “unexpectedly the stall warning briefly sounded.” He said that he added power and saw tree branches off the right wing. The airplane struck the trees on the north side of the runway, descended in a clockwise spin, and impacted the ground.
The fuselage and both wings sustained substantial damage.The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
The pilot’s failure to maintain a proper approach path, which resulted in an impact with trees.

NEW MARKET, Va. (WHSV) — A Harrisonburg man was sent to the hospital after the small plane he was in crashed near New Market Airport Sunday, Apr. 9, according to Virginia State Police.
The American AA-1A Trainer aircraft was attempting to land at the airport when it drifted west of the runway and struck some trees, a release said.
The pilot, 87-year-old Robert Sholtes, was taken to Sentara RMH, then transferred to UVA hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
The Virginia State Police and FAA are investigating the accident to determine the exact cause.
