Cargo, passenger numbers up at Chicago Rockford International Airport (KRFD)

ROCKFORD — The number of pounds carried by cargo operators at Chicago Rockford International Airport rose 15.9 percent from 2015 to 2016 and passenger traffic increased 4.2 percent.

The cargo increase of 126.8 million pounds to 922.7 million pounds is a result of ABX starting operations on Sept. 9. ABX serves four flights a day. UPS also added two flights during the last quarter of 2016, which helped increase the overall landed weight.

Passenger traffic rose by 9,132 in 2016 to 225,890 passengers, in part because Allegiant added capacity on the Punta Gorda, Mesa and Clearwater routes. Punta Gorda saw the greatest increase with 3,478 more seats available in 2016.

"These numbers support the fact that we are committed to taking well-calculated and thought-out risks to ensure RFD remains one of the strongest economic drivers in the region," Mike Dunn, executive director of the airport said in a news release.
