AIRPORT-- A plane made an emergency landing at Princess Juliana International Airport SXM close to 1:00pm Friday. The aircraft was occupied by the pilot who did not sustain any injuries during the emergency landing.
Ameriflight usually brings in cargo for United Parcel Services, Inc. (UPS) from Puerto Rico. The runway was closed to incoming flights due to the disabled plane sitting on the airstrip. Flights were redirected to surrounding airports, including Grand Case and St. Barths.
The Daily Herald understands the Ameriflight plane made the emergency landing on its rear wheels as the nose wheel would not deploy. Civil Aviation head Louis Halley said in an invited comment that the plane, while descending towards the runway, had collapsed and landed without its nose gear.
“Several planes were circling before getting the okay to land on the runway. Nobody was hurt during the emergency landing. We are awaiting the full report on the incident from the airport emergency services,” said Halley.
Ameriflight LLC is a United States (US) cargo airline with headquarters at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Texas. It is the largest US FAA Part 135 cargo carrier, operating scheduled and contract cargo services from 19 bases to destinations in 250 cities across 43 US states, as well as Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America.
Ameriflight serves major financial institutions, freight forwarders, laboratories and overnight couriers in the US, and provides feeder services for overnight express carriers nationwide and internationally.
This newspaper counted six international jets in front of the airport building at the time of the incident. The runway was reopened around 3:15pm.
A small aircraft crashed into the sea between the islands of Saba and St. Maarten on August 12, 2015. The Coast Guard and St. Maarten Sea Rescue set out to search after the crash. The pilot was rescued by a nearby yacht that saw the crash. The plane belonged to Mountain Air Cargo, which is contracted by FedEx.
In October 2014, the pilot and co-pilot died after a small FedEx aircraft crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff from the Airport.
