A corporate jet making an international flight stopped for an emergency landing at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport Saturday afternoon after losing cabin pressure.
There were five people on board the plane, according to scanner traffic, and no passenger injuries were reported. Argus911 reported the incident at 4:18 p.m., and by 4:33 p.m. an ambulance at the scene was being cleared.
Sioux Falls Regional Airport Authority Executive Director Dan Lettelier said the plane was traveling from Canada to Salt Lake City when it lost cabin pressure.
“They elected to be on the safe side and Sioux Falls was the closest airport to land at,” Lettelier said.
Loss of cabin pressure is not a common occurrence, Lettelier said, although it can cause serious problems in larger aircraft due to a reduction of oxygen in the cabin.
Despite the unexpected stop in South Dakota, the passengers grounded during the emergency landing probably won’t be doing much sightseeing in Sioux Falls.
“We have a port here, so the port officer will clear the flight so they can charter another plane or wait until it’s fixed,” Lettelier said.
