Florida avionics firm, airport business to team • Tullahoma Regional (KTHA), Tennessee

A Florida company announced last week that it will soon join a business currently based at the Tullahoma Regional Airport.

Sarasota Avionics will team with XP Services in providing Garmin equipment for aircraft. XP Services is located in the northwest section of the airport property.

The Florida-based company is known worldwide for installing flight equipment on airplanes, Chuck Armstrong of XP Services told members of the Tullahoma Airport Authority Tuesday night.

“We will be a full-fledged Garmin dealer and sell avionics (electronic equipment that fits on an aircraft),” said Armstrong.

He said six-to-eight new jobs will be created and that the business will be operating out of an XP Services hangar at the airport.

“We will be installing Garmin GPS (global positioning system) equipment, as well as other Garmin avionics products on planes,” said Armstrong.

He said pilots from the Midwest and northern states are expected to use the Tullahoma facility instead of flying to the Sarasota facilities to have equipment installed.

According to Armstrong, three XP representatives will be spending three weeks at the Sarasota facility to learn about the installation of various pieces of equipment.

Armstrong also said additional hangar space would be needed in the future, and, according to airport manager Jon Glass, the company has been approved for the additional space.

Armstrong told authority members that the company would like to erect a large sign on its hangar to advertise the Sarasota Avionics equipment, to which members agreed.

The company will also be using its publications to advertise the Tullahoma facility, which Armstrong said would attract pilots to the airport.

He added that he met with company officials recently in Dallas to discuss the deal that will bring the business to the airport.

“The head of the company is well acquainted with the area as he is originally from Winchester,” Armstrong said.

“This is wonderful news for the city of Tullahoma, as well as the airport,” Glass said.

“This is as big as the AOPA event,” Armstrong said, adding that Sarasota Avionics will have a booth and an equipment display at the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association fly in in October in Tullahoma.

Glass informed the authority that the Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin construction on a road into the area where XP Services will be located in July or August.
