The pilot reported that he was landing his airplane at night and mistook the hangar lights for runway lights. The airplane struck trees on the final approach, then the ground before coming to rest, inverted. The pilot said that, in retrospect, he was on the incorrect radio frequency when he attempted to turn on the pilot-activated runway lights. A Federal Aviation Administration inspector examined the wreckage and reported that the airplane sustained substantial damage. The pilot reported that there were no mechanical problems with the airplane at the time of the accident. The runway lights operated normally after the accident.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
The pilot's use of an incorrect radio frequency when attempting to turn on the runway lights, resulting is an attempt to land the airplane while aligned with airport hangar lights.

ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -   A 77-year-old man was transported to a Montgomery hospital after a plane crash in Elmore County Friday night.

Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said it appears the single-engine Beechcraft overturned after clipping some treetops during landing at the Wetumpka Municipal Airport.

Wetumpka Mayor Jerry Willis said the pilot is from Elmore County and was returning from Texas. He's said to be a regular at the airport.

Willis said the pilot's injuries are serious. Franklin had previously said the pilot's injuries were minor.

The Federal Aviation Administration will be at the airport Saturday to investigate.

WETUMPKA -- A 76-year-old Millbrook man received non-life threatening injuries when the plane he was piloting crashed Friday evening at the Wetumpka Municipal Airport, said Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin.

The sheriff confirmed the man's identity as Dan Power of Millbrook.

Power was airlifted to a Montgomery hospital after the crash and expected to make a full recovery, the sheriff said.

It appears the Beechcraft was on final approach for landing about 7:30 p.m. when it clipped some trees, Franklin said. The plane crashes upside down, inside the fenced in area of the airport, short of the runway, he said. Power was the only person in the plane.

The FAA will conduct an investigation into the cause of the crash.
