Greenville, South Carolina: Pilot says he has flown into the record books

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Gary Davis said he set a world altitude record in his electric aircraft in the Upstate on Saturday.

Davis, a Greenville financial adviser who's been flying gliders and small aircraft for 39 years, took off from the Greenville Downtown Airport just after 11 a.m..

Davis said he climbed to 3,700 feet in his electric trike, named after its three-wheeled landing system.

Davis said no one has ever attempted to set an altitude record with this type of aircraft, and he believes, with the right conditions and thermal currents, these aircraft can fly to a height of around two miles.

The flight will go on record with The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, which Davis said keeps world aeronautical records.
