Gloucester County, Virginia: Search of downed plane yields nothing

GLOUCESTER — Reports of a downed airplane on Friday afternoon that prompted a search of the Allmondsville area of the county yielded no signs of a plane, prompting a suspension of a wide-scale search just about 6:30 p.m.

Volunteer firefighters and Gloucester County Sheriff's deputies along with Virginia State Police troopers scoured the woods of the Allmondsville area after reports were received by local authorities of a downed aircraft. The area that was searched includes Allmondsville and Ark roads along the York River.

The search area encompassed rural residential neighborhoods, swampy inlets, piney woods and agricultural fields.

About 3:50 p.m. Friday the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office contacted the Virginia State Police of a possible plane down or in distress in the area of Allmondsville Road, said Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police.

The Newport News/Williamsburg Airport advised the Gloucester Sheriff's Office that a distress signal had been received from a plane.

Yet no reports have been received by authorities or airports of missing airplanes, Anaya said.

The area of the search in Gloucester is across the York River from Camp Peary, a 10,000-acre CIA camp and training center known as "The Farm."

Residents of the Allmondsville area said they heard and saw search aircraft circling the area throughout the afternoon.
