A pilot who was forced to
land a microlight plane because the propeller “departed from the
aircraft” is no closer to the cause of his mid-air drama.
The
68-year-old pilot of the aircraft, which is owned by a Welwyn man, had
to make an emergency landing on land at Westmill near Buntingford, after
hearing a loud bang in mid flight.
He then experienced a loss of thrust and landed the aircraft in an “uneventful forced landing”.
Upon landing he discovered that the propeller had flown off during his flight.
A
report into the incident, which occurred on the morning of July 26,
2013, failed to determine the cause of the mechanical failure.
The microlight was a 2007 built Kolb Firefly and the pilot had more than 4,985 hours of flying experience.
