BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) — When Chris Golembeski taxied to a stop recently in a Piper Cherokee 140 plane, all the mowed lawns and cleared tables finally had paid off.

He stepped onto the Bellefonte Airport runway as a licensed pilot.

After working months to cover his flight lessons, Golembeski, 17, passed his “check ride” at the side of a Federal Aviation Administration designated pilot examiner. At the youngest age allowed, an uncommon feat, the State College Area High School junior now has his official wings.

“I’m so proud of you,” flight instructor Chip Aikens said to his student, giving him a hug by the Cherokee as the examiner filled out license paperwork.

“Thanks for all you’ve done for me,” Golembeski said.

His triumphant flight marked the end of one adventure, and the gateway perhaps to many more.

For as long as he can remember, Golembeski has loved airplanes. Toy models led to a growing interest in flying through the clouds himself. About four years ago, he began contemplating lessons, but his dream didn’t take off until March 2011.
