Gen. William G. Moore served as the president and chief executive of the Metropolitan Nashville International Airport Authority for 17 years. He died Sunday at the age of 91.
The Tennessean Gen. William G. Moore, the retired four-star U.S. Air Force general who served as the president and chief executive of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority for 17 years, died Sunday. He was 91. Under his watch, Nashville International Airport opened its current main terminal, where American Airlines located a hub. The airport grew from six gates then to 47 gates when he retired in 2001.
“He took a little city airport to an international airport and one of the fast-growing and best airports in the South,” said Nashville attorney Sam Bartholomew Jr., who as general counsel has been Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s top lawyer for 39 years.
Gen. Moore was recruited to lead the airport not long after he relocated to Franklin upon retiring from the Air Force in 1979. The Waco, Texas, native was coming off a stellar career that included service in three wars, 240 combat missions and numerous honors. He also served as president of Emery Freight Inc. and on the boards of companies such as Evergreen International Aviation, a predecessor to Bank of America in Tennessee, and Genesco.
He was involved with community groups such as the Rotary Club of Nashville and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and raised funds for the Boy Scouts. He was recognized as Nashvillian of the Year in 1996 by what was then known as the Easter Seals Foundation of Nashville and in 1990 received the Barry Dean Fulton Award from United Cerebral Palsy of Middle Tennessee.
“The Airport Authority is grateful to have had the opportunity to be led by Gen. Moore and values and appreciates his commitment and service to aviation, the city and region, and economic development as he faithfully represented the Airport Authority and Nashville community for many years,” said Raul Regalado, current CEO of Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority. “We extend our deepest sympathy to the Moore family.”
Gen. Moore was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Allyson and Raymond Kirkpatrick of Huntsville, Ala., and his grandson Todd.
Services for Gen. Moore, who most recently lived in Huntsville, will be at 10:30 a.m. April 2 at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
