A QANTAS flight bound for Melbourne was forced to return to Sydney after passengers reported seeing sparks and flames outside their window last night.
Departing about 8.20pm, flight QF487 encountered a ''bird strike'' shortly after take-off, a Qantas spokeswoman said.
''QF487 landed safely back in Sydney at 8.50pm,'' she said, adding the 272 passengers were put on a replacement aircraft
Passenger Shane McKernan was sitting in the aircraft's middle row.
''There was a deafening, vibrating roar,'' he said. He said the captain at first thought it was an engine surge and made several announcement to reassure passengers.
